The Easy Way to Detangle Matted Dog Hair at Home

Dealing with matted dog hair can be a stressful, time-consuming and sometimes painful experience. But don't worry – there are a few simple strategies you can use to successfully remove the knots, detangle the fur and keep your pup looking their best!

1. Gather Supplies.

Before you begin detangling, make sure you're properly equipped. You’ll need a quality detangling brush, pet-safe detangling spray, and some patience (+ don't forget treats!).

2. Use a Detangling Spray to Soften Matted Fur.

You can apply a pet-friendly detangling spray to help smooth and soften the matts. Make sure you spray the matted patch generously, then use your hands (you can also use a wide-toothed comb) to brush out the knots. Before you start brushing too vigorously, test one small section of fur to make sure that the spray is helping to loosen the knot. Remember, using too much force can damage your pup's coat!

3. Comb Gently with a Slicker Brush.

A slicker brush is the best way to de-tangle a matted coat. Start by sectioning off small parts of the matts, then begin gently brushing with your brush. If you come across a particularly knotty patch, use the spray and your fingers to loosen before continuing with the brush. As you brush through each area, make sure to take extra care as brushing too vigorously can cause further damage.

4. Prevent Matting by Regularly Brushing Your Dog's Coat

Brushing your dog's fur is an essential part of keeping matting at bay. To keep their coat healthy, smooth and tangle-free, brush your pup with a good quality pin brush or slicker brush at least once every week. Begin by brushing in the direction their fur naturally falls, then check for any mats or knots and use left it to handle them as soon as you can.
